April 2024
In April 2024, Rural Aid volunteers travelled to Dalveen in Queensland’s Granite Belt region to support farming families recovering from the devastating bushfires that swept through the Southern Downs and border regions in late 2023. Fuelled by dry conditions, strong winds and extreme fire danger, the fires burned through thousands of hectares across the Granite Belt, destroying fencing, pastures, equipment and critical farm infrastructure. Communities around Dalveen, Wallangarra and surrounding areas faced widespread damage, with many families left facing years of recovery work after the fires tore through their properties.
During the Farm Recovery Event, 31 volunteers worked alongside seven local farming families to help tackle the enormous clean-up and rebuilding effort left behind by the bushfires. From repairing fencing to clearing damaged areas and assisting with practical farm jobs, every contribution helped ease the pressure on families working hard to rebuild their properties and livelihoods. Beyond the physical support, the event brought encouragement, connection and a reminder that rural communities are strongest when people come together to help one another through difficult seasons.
